The fight to end qualified immunity

At BYD’s April 2023 General Meeting, after a presentation by the grassroots organization End QI NY, the membership of the Brooklyn Young Democrats voted to formally endorse the fight to end qualified immunity.

S182/A710, the Bill to End Qualified Immunity, would ensure that victims of rights violations by government officials have a chance at justice, that we are able to protect our constitutional rights, and are a key component in making New York safe for everyone.

BYD’s membership voted to endorse this policy because ending qualified immunity is a deeply important issue for the young people our club represents. Recent polling data from Data For Progress shows a majority of voters aged 18-29 support the policy change, and that trust in police officers is lowest amongst this age group.

To create truly safe communities, we need to be able to hold police officers accountable for their actions, and ensure victims of police brutality can effectively seek justice.
